Introduction to Dental Sleep Medicine Workshop   (9/25/2010 - 9/25/2010)

TARGET AUDIENCE
This workshop is intended for dentists, hygienists, and their staff who have either no knowledge or limited knowledge of dental sleep medicine and the desire to learn the fundamentals in order to determine the extent to which they want to pursue more education with the goal to integrate dental sleep medicine into the general practice of dentistry.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
The Introduction to Dental Sleep Medicine workshop will cover the basics of sleep pathophysiology and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA); screening evaluation and assessment will be discussed as well as treatment options. The role of the dentist in treating OSA will be the foundation of the course. The content of this workshop will provide attendees with the knowledge and skills to screen for OSA in their practice.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Introduce dental health care professionals to obstructive sleep apnea, to include the concepts of normal sleep and pathophysiology of OSA;
  2. Describe the significant consequences to individual and society;
  3. Recognize the signs and symptoms of OSA; and
  4. Raise awareness for need for dental sleep medicine education.

CONTINUING EDUCATION
The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider. The formal educational programs of the AADSM are also accepted by the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) for Fellowship/Mastership credit.

This course has been approved for 8.00 CE credits.

TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is intended for dentists and dental professionals with an interest in, or currently treating, snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients through the utilization of oral appliance therapy (OAT).
 
COURSE OVERVIEW
The Introduction to Dental Sleep Medicine course is a logical way to incorporate OAT into your practice. The course includes a review of sleep related breathing disorders, such as snoring and OSA, and the impact of sleep disorders on society. A comprehensive evaluation is described that includes upper airway examination and imaging with a focus on areas of pathophysiology in OSA. Several sessions address the range of OAT and upper airway surgery for OSA. The course addresses practice issues such as developing a team approach, medico-legal issues and reimbursement. A final portion of the course is case-based and provides clinical examples of the evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders in a dental practice.
 
COURSE OBJECTIVES
 
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:
 
  • Describe the dental and medical terminology associated with sleep medicine and OSA.
  • Understand the pathophysiology, demographics and sequelae of OSA.
  • Evaluate, analyze and comprehend polysomnogram reports and understand the necessity of medical evaluation and importance of a multidisciplinary team approach to treating snoring and OSA.
  • Identify and describe the various treatment options available, focusing on the various types of oral appliances available.
  • Describe the mechanisms of action of various types of oral appliances as well as the indications, contraindications, complications and side effects associated with their use.
  • Evaluate various case presentations that demonstrate a range of patients and treatment situations representative of the practice of dental sleep medicine to include fabrication concepts, interpretation of bite registrations and adherence to recommended treatment protocol and standards of practice.
  • Apply practical concepts for building and developing a successful dental sleep medicine practice, including an overview of informed consent, relationships with physicians, sources of patient referrals, follow-up with current patients, record keeping, and medical insurance billing.
 

Advanced Dental Sleep Medicine   (10/30/2010 - 10/31/2010)

Las Vegas, NV
TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is intended for dentists with a basic knowledge in the field of dental sleep medicine who are currently treating patients with obstructive sleep apnea using oral appliance therapy (OAT) and wish a deeper understanding of the effect of sleep disordered breathing on overall health and the benefits available from working in close collaboration with physicians and other health care providers.
 
COURSE OVERVIEW
This course includes lectures from an expert faculty regarding different sleep disorders and how they are impacting the treatment of patients and various group discussions related to OAT. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss the interaction of sleep and nutrition, obesity and metabolic disorders with medical researchers and clinicians. Additionally, airway surgery will be presented from an anatomical and treatment planning perspective. Case reports of complications will be submitted.  During interactive sessions, attendees will discuss side-effects associated with OAT and develop consistent methods for treating those complications. Panels will be guided by ABDSM Diplomates, but group discussion and illumination of complications and solutions will come from every participant.

·         Treat patients with oral appliance therapy more routinely and effectively.
·         Recognize and correct complications that occur with OAT.
·         Utilize a consistent method for documenting complications related to OAT.
·         Discuss the airway anatomy and surgical options in greater detail
·         Understand better and be able to discuss with patients and physicians the role of nutrition and obesity in sleep disordered breathing.
