DARIEN, IL – The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) is warning teens about the risks of drowsy driving on prom night by sending a link to its new fact sheet to 30,000 high school guidance counselors and driver’s education instructors.  The campaign is the first step in the AADSM’s new “Dentists Against Drowsy Driving” initiative to promote public health and safety by raising awareness of the dangers involved with drowsy driving.

“Drowsy Driving is as Dangerous as Drunk Driving,” the fact sheet cautions. Signs of drowsy driving and ways to prevent it are included in the one page “Prom Night Spoiler Alert,” which also lists why high school prom attendees need to be vigilant:

• Teenagers are at a higher risk for drowsy driving.
• The majority of fall-asleep crashes involve young drivers.
• Drowsy driving accidents often occur after midnight.

The handout is free and available to the public at http://www.aadsm.org/pdfs/DrowsyDrivingFacts.pdf.

“As dentists who are concerned about our patients’ sleep health and their overall well-being, we felt that  it was imperative to reach young people at this time of year to help prevent any tragedy from occurring on one of their most memorable nights,” said AADSM President Sheri Katz, DDS. “It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement leading to prom and forget about getting enough sleep. But that’s a mistake, and we want to help students have a safe prom night by giving them some practical tips to prevent drowsy driving.”

The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) is a professional membership society that is dedicated to promoting the treatment of sleep-disordered breathing through the use of oral appliance therapy and dental surgery. As part of its mission, the AADSM works to increase public awareness of sleep-related problems such as snoring, obstructive sleep apnea and drowsy driving.
