Mastery 2 builds on the knowledge and clinical proficiency gained in Mastery 1 with continued emphasis on skill development to manage a broad spectrum of cases and severities of obstructive sleep apnea. Lectures will develop a more in-depth understanding of all aspects of dental sleep medicine, including administrative strategies for practice growth. An in-person, two-day workshop will provide clinical chairside confidence and prepare students to submit two required oral appliance therapy cases on real patients.
Completion of Mastery 1 is required to participate in Mastery 2. After completing both courses, eligible dentists can apply for the ABDSM certification examination. To learn more about the ABDSM exam, click here.

Successful completion of Mastery 1, including all clinical competency assignments and the Mastery 1 Quiz, is required to participate in Mastery 2. Additionally, those who register for Mastery 2 are required to carry professional liability coverage that includes coverage for training and educational activities sponsored by the AADSM.
Mastery 2 includes pre-recorded lectures that are available on-demand in the AADSM Online Learning Center so you can access the lectures when it works best for you. Participants are strongly encouraged to complete the Mastery 2 recorded lectures before attending the in-person Mastery 2 Practical Workshop, however it is not required. Attendance at the Mastery 2 Practical Workshop is required with registration for Mastery 2. This experiential, two-day workshop will take place at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry in downtown Chicago, IL.
Attendees will participate in small-group, roundtable discussions focused on challenging case presentations involving treatment planning, device selection and design, finding therapeutic position, side effect resolution and long-term patient management. Under the supervision and guidance of Mastery faculty, attendees will also participate in chairside exercises designed to apply their didactic learning from Mastery 1 and Mastery 2. Attendees will gain confidence in their clinical abilities and to provide optimal patient care. The oral appliances that will be used in clinic and for close inspection will include all common styles, materials, retention mechanisms and calibration strategies.
Following interactive demonstrations, attendees will be encouraged but not required to participate clinically in peer-to-peer comprehensive head/neck and oral examinations, full arch impressions and construction bite capture. All appropriate materials, equipment, scanners, instruments, and PPE to participate in the workshop will be provided by the AADSM. Oral appliances consisting of various materials, styles and design features will be manufactured and ready for small group delivery on Mastery faculty, all necessary supplies provided. Key learning objectives for delivery exercises include insertion considerations, adjustment techniques and patient coaching.
Recognizing that advanced clinical practice weighs heavily on patient history, differential diagnosis and decision making, attendees will treatment plan real patient cases including device design, calibration strategies and identification of treatment endpoints.
The Mastery 2 Practical Workshop includes in-kind donations from the following companies: Airway Management, Apnea Sciences, Dynaflex, EMA-Now, Good Sleep Company, Great Lakes Dental Technologies, Kettenbach, LeBlanc Dental Products, Inc., Max-Air Nose Cones, Modern Dental Laboratory, Myerson, LLC, Nexus Dental Systems, OADS, OASYS, Panthera, ProSomnus, Respire Medical – Whole You, Serena Sleep, and SomnoMed. The Mastery 2 Practical Workshop will feature up to seven tabletop exhibits. Workshop attendees will be provided the opportunity to interact with industry representatives and learn more about products and services.
