The AADSM has supported numerous dental sleep medicine research projects, either independently or in conjunction with other sleep-related foundations, including the AASM Foundation and CHEST. Some of these projects have been completed and others are ongoing.
Since 2024, the AADSM has also sponsored early career investigators through the AASM Foundation’s Young Investigators Research Forum, sponsoring dental sleep medicine investigators to participate in this program.
Each year, the AADSM Annual Meeting features abstracts focusing on a range of cutting-edge topics in dental sleep medicine. The top clinical and student abstracts receive awards and are highlighted by presenting oral presentations to the attendees.
To ensure that all dental sleep medicine researchers have an avenue for publishing their research, the AADSM publishes the Journal of Dental Sleep Medicine, an open access journal.
The AADSM provides funding to support the exploration of high impact and novel topics in the field of dental sleep medicine.
The AADSM held a webinar highlighting the experiences of previous Dental Research Award recipients as they crafted their applications, applied for the award and implemented their research studies. This webinar also features new and interesting findings from these funded dental sleep medicine research projects.
The AADSM is not currently accepting applications. Please check back during the next award cycle in early 2026.

The AADSM solicits abstracts summarizing a current research study in the field of dental sleep medicine. Abstracts may be submitted by clinicians, researchers or students and are reviewed by the AADSM's Scientific Committee for their scientific merit. Abstracts that are accepted are presented by the lead author and may be given an award at the AADSM's annual meeting.
The deadline for submitting abstracts for the 2026 Annual Meeting is January 12, 2026.
Participate Directly in Studies:
The AADSM provides members with updates on DSM studies that dentists and patients can participate in. Currently open studies include:
Survey for Dental Practitioners an Hygienists
Dr. Rahma Mungia, in partnership with Dr. Frank Lobbezoo (Bruxism expert at the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam) is actively recruiting dental practitioners and dental hygienists to fill out the KAPQ survey. Their goal is to have 200 completed surveys and also understand and increase dental practitioner knowledge about contemporary bruxism viewpoints. They aim to gather an understanding of the evolving bruxism paradigm. The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete.
Please reach out to Caitlin Sangdahl at sangdahl@uthscsa.edu if you are interested in taking the survey.
Join the NIDCR PBRN
Are you interested in enrolling your practice in research studies? The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN) is looking for dental practices to join its group and enroll in studies. The PBRN offers research training and resources and can be an excellent first step for a clinician who is interested in research. By joining as a dental sleep medicine provider, you can help bring representation from the field to the research community.

Journal of Dental Sleep Medicine (JDSM)
Keep informed on scientific developments with the Journal of Dental Sleep Medicine. As the AADSM’s official online publication, JDSM presents the latest research and key findings in in both dental sleep medicine and the broader domain of sleep-related breathing disorders.
The latest research and discoveries in dental sleep medicine can be found in the Latest Findings Newsletter emailed to members every month. If you are an AADSM member and not receiving this email, please reach out to info@aadsm.org.
Checklist for Conducting Clinical Research
The AADSM's Checklist for Conducting Clinical Research lays out the fundamental steps of how to design and conduct research studies and disseminate their results. This checklist is meant to be a primer for those who are entering the field of dental sleep medicine research and also answers key questions that a novice researcher may have.
