Robert R. Rogers, DMD

Robert R. Rogers, DMD (1991-1992; 1995-1996; 1999-2000)

Originally, as a general dentist, Dr. Rogers was part of a handful of dentists in 1990 who began using rudimentary, boil and bite oral appliances to address sleep-disordered breathing. This small group met once each month for the purposes of discussing experiences and gradually morphed into an organization of several dozen practitioners named the Sleep Disorders Dental Society, electing Dr. Rogers as the founding president.

The next decade was challenging as he and the SDDS slowly but surely addressed the challenges the society and practitioners faced in the absence of research and physician support. During these ten years, Dr. Rogers served as president twice more as well as serving on multiple committees. During this time, the SDDS was based out of the den in Dr. Rogers’ house with his wife, Mary Beth, serving as the first Executive Director. Her service cannot be overstated as she managed a growing membership, organized annual meetings and served as liaison to other medical groups and insurance companies. She became the first recipient of the Distinguished Service award.

Over time, Dr. Rogers’ private practice grew to treat exclusively sleep-disordered breathing and was one of the first to be accepted in-network with major insurers. In addition to private practice, he worked with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine to author Position Papers and Clinical Guidelines related to oral appliance therapy.

He is a recipient of the AADSM Distinguished Service Award and was a frequent speaker at the AADSM annual Meetings.  He has also presented lectures on oral appliance therapy to physicians, dentists and patient groups throughout the United States.

The AADSM also thanks its innaugural Executive Director
