NOTE: You will need to enter the expiration date of your current professional liability (i.e., malpractice) insurance policy to complete your registration. Please have this on-hand before beginning the registration process.
This experiential, two-day workshop is limited to individuals who are either Diplomates or international certificants of the ABDSM or have completed the AADSM Mastery Program in its entirety between 2018-2022. Those who do not meet this criterion are encouraged to register for the AADSM Mastery Program, which includes a similar clinical workshop.
During the workshop, attendees will participate in small-group, roundtable discussions focused on challenging case presentations involving treatment planning, device design, finding therapeutic position, side effect resolution and long-term patient management. Under the guidance of faculty, attendees will also participate in chairside exercises designed to apply their previous didactic learning. Attendees will gain confidence in their clinical abilities to provide optimal patient care. The oral appliances that will be used in clinic and for close inspection will include all common designs, materials, retention mechanisms and calibration strategies. The student to faculty ratio will be no more than 1:6, ensuring ample face-to-face time with experts in dental sleep medicine.
Following interactive demonstrations, attendees will be encouraged but not required to participate clinically in peer-to-peer comprehensive head/neck and oral examinations, full arch impressions and construction bite acquisition. All appropriate materials, equipment, scanners, instruments, and PPE to participate in the workshop will be provided by the AADSM. Oral appliances consisting of various materials, styles and design features will be manufactured and ready for small group delivery on faculty, all necessary supplies provided. Key learning objectives for delivery exercises include insertion considerations, adjustment techniques and patient coaching.
Availability is limited and on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the workshop, participants will gain confidence in their ability to:
- Incorporate screening protocols for adult sleep-related breathing disorders including skeletal, soft tissue and functional assessments of the craniomandibular complex and nasal-oral airway.
- Perform a comprehensive dental sleep medicine exam and extrapolate key findings into appropriate patient management such as treatment planning, device design and side effect management.
- Educate, motivate, and empower patients to participate in oral appliance success through self-care, compliance, titration, exercises and symptomatic tracking.
- Improve OAT outcomes by identifying and targeting patient-unique disease expression in order to improve efficacy through home applied strategies and collaborative treatments with medical specialties.
- Continue to build an understanding of the medical practice model with medical-legal considerations.
- Perfect an appropriate algorithm for patient management that begins with screening and ends with long-term follow-up.
